Job Duties:  Almex USA, Inc. in Buena Park, CA is a leading supplier of commercial and aerospace aluminum billet and slab casting technology and equipment.  We are seeking an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer to lead a team in the research and development of new or enhanced products and manufacturing processes.

Job responsibilities and duties include:

Create and review new equipment designs & installations to develop technical solutions.

Utilize mechanical engineering principals for new product development.

Interpret customer specification; create 3D solid CAD models to meet customer specification.

Provide technical information and analyze customer proposals to evaluate feasibility, functional requirements, and maintenance requirements of equipment.

Work within assigned budget for Research and Development projects.

Develop prototypes of new products.

Analyze data to determine feasibility and design of new products.

Analyze, test, and validate new development in-house before submitting designs to external testing laboratory.

Design and draft engineering drawings of cast house layouts, foundations, utility specifications and routing, using AutoCAD to ensure smooth material movement and optimize space utilization within the cast house.

Develop custom-tailored engineering solutions for custom projects.

Modify existing designs to provide optimum solution for product development as well as preferred manufacturing process.

Involve in all aspects of the process: from concept/scope development, CAD drawings, project planning to execution/installation.

Use Finite-Element-Analysis software to conduct Stress and Strain analysis to determine the likely points of failure in machine components by analyzing the fracture and fatigue points; suggest modifications to design to improve the life cycle of the product.

Conduct research on equipment’s’ utility requirements, performance, and operation under different environmental conditions.

Verify end-product for dimensional accuracy, surface integrity and functional usability.

Participate in technical investigations; investigate equipment non-conformances and make recommendation for design improvements.

Perform root cause analysis with a goal to eliminate maintenance downtime.

Provide training to users on operation and maintenance of equipment.

Participate in installation and troubleshooting of equipment at customer’s facility.

Suggest operation, maintenance, and repair activities to the customer to obtain optimum utilization of the machinery and equipment and minimize downtime.

Coordinate and direct the work of a small team of at least three (3) people, including engineers, interns and/or outside consultants.

**NOTE: THIS POSITION INVOLVES PROCESS PLANNING, PROJECT WORK AND OVERALL PROJECT COORDINATION.  IT DOES NOT INVOLVE SUPERVISION OF ANY PERSONNEL NOR ANY PARTICIPATION IN MANAGEMENT STAFFING DECISIONS (I.E., REVIEWS, COMPENSATION, HIRING OR TERMINATION).

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or any related Engineering field of study, plus five (5) years of post-degree, progressively responsible experience in any related position(s) involving design, manufacturing, or installation of heavy machinery.

Qualified candidates must also have demonstrable knowledge, experience, skill, and proficiency with the following:

  1. AutoCAD 2D CAD Drafting
  2. Solidworks 3D CAD Modeling and Solidworks Finite Element Analysis
  3. 3D Printing
  4. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Vertical Direct Chill Aluminum Casting
  5. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Furnace and Combustion Technologies
  6. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Molten Aluminum Purification and Stirring Technologies
  7. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Thermodynamics and Fluid Flow Systems
  8. Refractory design and selection
  9. PLC Automation

Domestic and international travel required approximately 20% of the time.  No telecommuting.
